Make Every Second Count!

January 9, 2015

The year 2015 started off with some very sad news for me. On Jan 1, 2015, my friend, Mark, who I paddled with on a dragon boat team called the Gift of Life, passed away unexpectedly. The Gift of Life Dragon Boat Team is comprised of individuals who actively promote organ donor registration and transplantation. Many on the team are organ recipients.

Random Acts of Kindness

September 18, 2013

I love hearing about random acts of kindness. My heart sings knowing there are loving, caring, and decent people who go out of their way to help and bring joy to others. There’s so much negativity in the world, and so often, only bad news is reported. It’s a breath of fresh air to hear stories of random acts of kindness, or, better yet, to experience them firsthand for yourself.

Be Kind To Yourself!

July 8, 2013

How often are you your own worst enemy? Do you judge yourself harshly? Do you come down on yourself when you think you’ve made a “mistake?” Please don’t! Love yourself enough to be kind to yourself.

What are your passions? It’s so important to spend time doing what you are passionate about. When you are in the present moment, immersed in something you love, you can’t help but experience pure bliss! You find yourself smiling and overcome with joy!

One of my passions is being on water or having the presence of water near me. I must have been born a water baby! Water inspires me. I love everything water related: walking along beaches by oceans and bays, swimming in lakes, or sitting and writing by a creek or river. The first summer I arrived in Vancouver, I learned to sail, windsurf, and dragonboat. I absolutely loved sailing and dragonboating, and eventually raced competitively for many years. I later developed a passion for racing outriggers and kayaking too.

It took me a long time to learn to love myself. I grew up in an Asian culture where I was taught to be selfless, and to always put the needs and desires of other people before my own. The expectation was to never think of myself first, as that was selfish. My parents’, siblings’, relatives’, and friends’ needs and wants, all took priority over mine. It was ingrained in me to put my own needs and desires last. Pleasing others was more important than pleasing myself. Self-sacrifice was honorable.

Turkey is one of my favorite countries that I have traveled to. I enjoyed Turkey so much that my “two week” visit there stretched to almost two months! Turkey is so diverse! I saw so many unbelievable sights and had such spectacular experiences that I could write a book about Turkey itself (but I won’t for now!). When you think about Turkey, you may think of the incredible mosques in Istanbul, the historical ruins of Ephesus, the beautiful beaches of Bodrum, or the magical fairy chimneys in Cappadocia (all of which I will write about in another blog post). However, one of my most memorable experiences was attending a circumcision ceremony.
